Smart Water Meter Failing Too Soon? These 4 Usage and Maintenance Tips Might Be Crucial for You!

With the rapid development of urban infrastructure, new buildings are springing up across cities. In most cases, property developers install smart water meters for users before construction is completed. This not only reduces the workload of meter-reading staff at water supply companies but also makes payment and usage far more convenient than traditional meters—an undeniable advantage in modern living environments.

However, many users report that their smart water meters begin to malfunction after a period of use, with some even experiencing shortened lifespans. So let’s explore how to properly maintain and care for smart water meters to ensure they last longer and perform reliably.

1. Installation Environment

During installation and use, it’s essential to assess whether the surrounding environment is suitable—especially when choosing the installation location. The meter should be placed in conditions that allow it to function optimally. For example, if the meter is installed in areas with high humidity, elevated temperatures, or corrosive gases, it may not show immediate issues. But over time, these conditions can impair the meter’s performance and shorten its lifespan, ultimately affecting normal usage.

2. Corrosion

While reputable manufacturers typically use corrosion-resistant materials for the exterior of smart water meters, internal components such as chips and electronic circuits are much more vulnerable to acidic or alkaline substances. If corrosive materials infiltrate the internal system, they can severely disrupt operation or even render the meter unusable. Therefore, it’s critical to keep smart meters away from corrosive environments.

3. Placement

Nothing should be placed on top of a smart water meter. Long-term placement of objects above the meter can lead to physical damage or interfere with its measurement accuracy.

4. Impact and Scratches

Although smart water meters are made from durable materials, their internal components are more sophisticated and sensitive than those in traditional meters. This means they require extra care during maintenance. Avoid repeated scratching or bumping, and ideally install the meter in a location away from frequent human contact. Continuous physical impact can compromise the accuracy of card-based meters and shorten their service life, ultimately affecting user interests.
