Does a Smart Water Meter Have to Be Replaced After 6 Years?

A friend recently asked me about the service life of smart water meters. He was clearly a little dissatisfied with the answer of "4-6 years," muttering that he thought a single purchase would last for ten or even eight years without needing a replacement.

In fact, many people share this view, subconsciously believing that equipment like water and electricity meters must be able to last for ten or eight years to be considered good quality.

It is true that current technology allows for the manufacture of water meters that could be used for such a long time, but neither smart nor ordinary water meters are actually designed to do so. Why is this the case?

The answer is actually quite simple, and it comes down to the following three points:

1. Water Meter Usage:

After a water meter has been used for a period, wear and tear resulting from water quality, environment, and other factors will reduce its measurement accuracy and increase the error. Therefore, regular replacement of the meter is necessary to address these issues.

2. Relevant Laws and Regulations for Water Meters:

Using a water meter for more than 6 years without replacement is against the law, and this applies to both smart and ordinary water meters.

According to the Metrology Law (or similar measurement regulations), when a household water meter has been used for more than 6 years, or a gas meter for more than 10 years, it must be replaced. Otherwise, product aging can lead to safety hazards.

3. Water Meter Accuracy:

As a water meter's service time increases, changes in its internal components may cause it to run faster than it should, necessitating a replacement when its service life expires.

In addition to product aging due to extended use, issues with a water meter running too fast may also be caused by the following situations:

  1. New Home Installation: Air in the pipes or unstable water supply pressure when first moving into a new home.

  2. High-Rise Buildings: An imperfect secondary water supply system in high-rise buildings, leading to water pressure fluctuations.

  3. Poor Water Quality: Poor water quality causes scaling, which narrows the flow channel and increases the speed of the water flow.

Therefore, if the above situations are not present in your home, yet you find that your water bill is excessive this month, you can check if the water meter has exceeded its service life and should be replaced.

When replacing your water meter, it is also best to choose a smart water meter that better suits your needs, as this will make your daily use more convenient.
