Nowadays, in our daily lives, smart water meters have replaced the old-style mechanical water meters, becoming the most commonly used type of water meter in modern society, with the widest application area and the largest user base. Especially in high-rise residential buildings, smart water meters are almost universally used, and very few users still use the old-style meters.

Even in areas where old-style water meters are still in use, it is mostly in buildings that were constructed a long time ago or are not particularly tall. Therefore, there is no doubt that the smart water meter is a more advanced meter than the old-style mechanical water meter, and is favored by users, consumers, and water supply departments.

But this brings up a question that many people are confused about: what exactly is the difference between a smart water meter and a mechanical water meter? Why was the smart water meter able to replace the old-style meter so easily and smoothly? What are its advantages?

To find the answer to the above questions, we must first understand the pros and cons of the mechanical water meters we used previously.

As an old-style meter, the mechanical water meter was able to dominate the water meter market for so many years, so it certainly had its own advantages. Not only did it have a low failure rate and a low price, but it also allowed for on-site readings, which was quite convenient for the usage environment of the past.

However, with the development and progress of the times, the shortcomings of this type of meter have become increasingly obvious. Specifically, it not only requires manual, door-to-door meter reading to obtain the usage data, but it is also very inconvenient to manage. When issues like water theft or unpaid water bills occurred, there was no effective way to deal with them, which caused a lot of headaches.

The smart water meter is different. Because it comes with very advanced technologies, including sensing technology, microelectronics technology, and smart IC card technology, the smart water meter does not suffer from the drawbacks of mechanical meters during use.

It can not only precisely measure and display water consumption but also remotely transmit data. Furthermore, users can settle or pay their bills in real-time through smart devices like mobile phones or computers. This is not only convenient for the user but also eliminates the hassle of staff making door-to-door visits for meter reading and the series of safety hazards that accompany it.

Moreover, in the actual process of usage, the mechanical water meter, due to the limitations of its operating method, is subject to significant wear and tear during use, whereas the smart water meter does not have this problem. It has a longer service life, making it a more reliable choice.
